This practical one day cadaveric workshop is unique in the southern hemisphere. Entirely hands on, this workshop is designed in direct response to WA Trainee feedback and is suitable for Trainees and Fellows in Plastic Surgery, and Unaccredited Registrars with an interest in Plastic Surgery. Offered on a biennial basis, this workshop will next be offered in 2027.

Overview

This workshop features concurrent full day Junior and Senior Trainee practical sessions designed to increase knowledge and the acquisition of technical skills in lower limb flap procedures.   Each session is tailored to provide Trainees with appropriate surgical training for their level of ability and skill set.

It will provide participants with exposure to mandatory flap procedures and specialist / advanced flap procedures of increasing importance in clinical plastic surgery practice.

The Junior Trainee Practical Session is suitable for Service Registrars and Junior SET Trainees in Plastic Surgery.  The Senior Trainee Session is suitable for Senior SET Trainees and Fellows in Plastic Surgery.  Limited positions are available for Observers and for Theatre Nurses in assisting and scrubbing for workshop participants.


Workshop Content

The Junior Trainee Session will focus on the following cadaveric (leg) practical procedures:
  • TFL flap
  • Gracilis flap
  • Posterior tibial perforator / propeller flaps
  • Gastrocnemius flap
The Senior Trainee Session will offer the following cadaveric (leg) practical procedures:
  •  ALT flap
  • Fibular flap
  • Groin flap - pedicled and ‘free’. Includes the SCIP flap
The following procedures may be performed if time permits, and in response to participant interest:
  • Medial Sural flap
  • Reversal Sural flap
  • Medial Genicular Osteoperiostal flap
  • Medial Plantar flap
  • DCIA flap

Workshop numbers are limited to provide participants with the best opportunity for maximum dissection time.
