CTEC’s JDocs: Emergency Procedures workshop aims to assist Junior Doctors in attaining an improved level of confidence and hands-on experience in a range of procedures, skills and behaviours for medical and surgical emergencies.

Overview

Participants will deepen their understanding and skills in basic ultrasound scanning techniques, proctoscopy and rigid sigmoidoscopy. They will also gain knowledge and familiarity with the physiology and basic techniques in suprapubic and central venous catheter insertion. 

This one-day hands-on workshop features animal tissue and synthetic models and its content is specifically designed to meet the essential surgical skills required to apply for specialty training, and follows the RACS Junior Doctors Curriculum Framework.

 

Workshop Content

Practical Sessions and Presentations

Basics of Ultrasound:
  • Terminology and definitions
  • Knobology: probes and module
  • Scan planes and image orientation
  • Patient positioning
  • Ultrasound guided cannulation

 

Access techniques: 
  • CVC placement under ultrasound (sub-clavian)
  • Interosseous vascular access (EZIO)
  • Nasogastric tube placement
  • Presentation: Seldinger technique and the arterial line
 
Catheterisation techniques:
  • Male and female urethral catheter
  • Suprapubic catheter

 

Workshop Inclusions
